In September 2024, I received an invitation that truly honored me—Gabriela Rojo, Head of the Instructional Design and Educational Innovation Unit at the Universidad de Guadalajara, asked me to participate in the development of Course 3: Emprendimiento con Propósito, a MOOC for Coursera. Only four instructional designers were selected, and I was thrilled to be one of them.
This wasn’t just any course. It was part of a larger, structured initiative by UdG+ and Coursera, meaning expectations were high—and timelines were tight. They provided a clear instructional framework, and even a specialized course on how to draft engaging video scripts. Everything needed to be simple, accessible, and clear, avoiding technical jargon to ensure that learners from diverse backgrounds could engage fully.
The challenge? Taking the disciplinary content provided by subject-matter experts and transforming it into a vibrant, interactive learning experience—on a platform where learners expect nothing less than excellence. From the very start, I knew this project would push me creatively. I was excited by the freedom to design dynamic activities, to visualize complex ideas in simple ways, and to craft a learning journey that could inspire real-world action.
Designing for impact: A creative process with clear limits
Unlike other projects where I built both the structure and the content, this MOOC came with a pre-defined instructional framework. UdG+ and Coursera had already established the structure, but the creativity within that framework was up to us.
One of the biggest differences in this design process was scale. Every script, every activity, every video had to resonate with a global audience. There was no room for complex language or overly academic concepts. Instead, I had to ensure that every piece of content was clear, engaging, and actionable.
After the Coursera training on effective video scripting, I approached this part of the process with a new perspective. I focused on:
- Storytelling techniques that made abstract concepts feel real and personal.
- Scenarios to help learners visualize practical applications.
- Using AI tools to streamline content adaptation and test clarity.
Despite the tight deadlines, I thrived on the challenge of creating something fast but meaningful. Working with a small, elite team of instructional designers, we exchanged ideas, provided feedback, and refined our work to meet Coursera’s high standards.
This wasn’t just about getting content online—it was about creating a course that could inspire people across the world to pursue social entrepreneurship with purpose and vision.
Skills in Action: Growth Through Design at Scale
This MOOC wasn’t just another project—it was a testing ground for some of my most important professional skills. Each phase, from adapting expert content to delivering polished, interactive materials, gave me the chance to refine and apply a wide range of abilities:
1. Strategic Thinking:
With a tight timeline and a defined framework, I had to think strategically about how to approach each task. Prioritizing content, managing deadlines, and ensuring every element aligned with the overall goals of the course were key. I developed planning systems that helped me break down complex tasks into actionable steps, ensuring nothing was left behind.
2. Creativity and Innovation:
Even within strict guidelines, there was room to innovate. I enjoyed crafting unique learning experiences—from scenario-based scripts to visually engaging infographics. I used storytelling not just to explain concepts, but to make them memorable, helping learners connect emotionally and practically with the content.
3. Instructional Writing and Clarity:
This project sharpened my ability to write with precision. Every script and activity needed to be clear, engaging, and free of unnecessary complexity. Writing for a global audience taught me how to focus on universal understanding, simplifying without losing depth.
4. Leadership and Independence:
Although we worked in a small team, I had full responsibility over my course module, which meant making independent decisions, managing my time, and delivering results without constant oversight. This strengthened my self-leadership and my ability to own a project from start to finish.
5. Collaboration:
Even as I worked independently, I remained part of a collaborative circle. Sharing insights, receiving feedback, and adjusting to collective standards helped me become a more flexible and responsive designer. I learned to give and receive constructive feedback efficiently, which improved not only my work but the team’s coherence.
Results That Speak: Deliverables and Impact
Over the course of the project (September 1st to November 15th, 2024), I delivered a comprehensive set of high-quality educational materials, including:
- 39 interactive video scripts across four modules.
- 11 engaging forums to foster peer interaction.
- 11 carefully structured quizzes that aligned with learning outcomes.
- 13 infographics and 11 readings designed to deepen understanding.
Each piece was crafted to contribute to a seamless learning experience, with a focus on engagement, retention, and actionable insights.
Though we designed for a massive audience, I made sure every element of my work felt personal, as if speaking directly to each learner. The result? A course that not only met the expectations of UdG+ and Coursera, but also reflected my commitment to quality and passion for impactful education.
Ongoing Impact: A Project Still Growing
Although the MOOC is still in production—understandably, given the scale and number of videos required—I take pride in knowing that my contribution has been completed and recognized. Receiving my diploma for participation marked not just the closing of a contract, but the fulfillment of a creative journey. I look forward to seeing the course live, knowing that it carries the work, passion, and dedication of a team committed to accessible, high-quality learning at scale.
